I personally have investigated this location with my team many times. Is it haunted? Well, since I haven't seen a 'ghost' with my own eyes here, I will have to say it is possible. My team and I did in fact have MANY very interesting experiences and captured some pretty scary evps. Occasionally while having experiences we would capture photos that were incredibly bizarre. Not orbs but very strange bodies of light. The location is massive to say the least. It is not recommended that you visit this hospital without proper permission. The building is in terrible shape and it dangerous to walk around in. Over the years the place has fallen to the wills of nature as many of the windows and doors are missing. The tiles on the floor have come unglued and crack with each movement. The wallpaper in each room is pealing off....if the wall is still intact that is. Our investigations turned over some very interesting results and experiences. At one time we were in the 1st floor with a strange ticking sound. As we would investigate it would stop. We would walk off and it would start again. This was followed by one of the loud 'THUMPS' we have ever heard. It was so loud and powerful....we have no idea what it could have been. It happened multiple times without clear direction from where it came from. Another investigation involved opening and closing doors, movement without the floor tiles cracking....which is impossible since all the tiles in the whole hospital have come unglued. The evps were certainly the most powerful evidence we captured. Voices and very nonhuman laughter. It certainly gave us all chills every time we listen. At one point, a female voice (we had no female members at the time) says, "I hate this place!" Other evps would say, "Down below" when we were asking questions about the building. During our 1st investigation, a evp that was captured state, "I didn't do a damn thing" in reference to some questioning that we were involved in. I would love to go back to this location and investigate further and look forward to more investigations. I will check by here ever so often if anyone has any questions or adds to this.
I am from Banner Elk and have been in the hospital many times when it was open, there are voices, ghost and evil in that place. I would love to see any pics you might have.
I was here last week and this place is NOT Haunted! It is a place locals tell 'BS' stories about....It is rundown & has been vandalized very bad. It can be dangerous as there is debris everywhere! Also the Cops have a hidden spot they hang and wait for people to come out of the hospital & they will ticket you! I got caught, but after some conversation, they let us go...But that is because we knew a few of the same Peeps! I would advise staying out of here as it has a ton of asbestos too!
Comment 1- This pretty much goes hand in hand with our experiences. We took hundreds of photos of the abandoned Connon Memorial Hospital. It is so incredibly dusty that every image looks to have capture hundreds of orbs. So, we do not pay any attention to so called orbs.
The atmospher is very wild. Like you said the tiles are bubbling up from the floors, wires and cables are hanging, and there is broken glass and damage everywhere.
I found the fact that when they relocated to the new hospital they didn't take all the files with them. You can actually review charts and diagnoses of patients. It is really amazing.
We did hear doors slamming during our first visit and our last. The first time the door slamming came from the entrace while we were on the second floor. The last visit we were on the main floor when we heard footsteps and doors slamming above us. I would call this paranormal activity. There could have been someone up there. It was just odd. When we raced to see what was making the noises it was too late. We didn't find anything.
I have posted audio on the main page of our investigation of the Cannon Memorial Hospital located in Banner Elk. Please feel free to download it and review it. Please let us know if you find anything.
Comment 2 - Please let us know why you believe the location to house "evil." I am very curious to hear back from you.
Comment 3- You are right about one thing, you have to be extremely careful if you choose to investigate this location. Please feel free to contact us if you need tips on how to gain access to this location.
I visited this hopsital during my freshman year at App. We actually snuck in around 1 a.m. on October 31. It ended up being one of the scariest nights of my life.
As I was driving on Highway 194 on my way to the hospital, my car completely died just after midnight. I found out later that my timing belt had broken. After being towed to a gas station in Banner Elk, I was already so creeped out that I wanted to go back into Boone, but the 6 or 7 people I was with decided we could all pile into the other car we'd taken and continue on to the hospital.
When we got there, we found that the automatic sliding doors on the right side of the hospital were open. The whole atmosphere of the place was really heavy, but I ignored my instincts, and me and my friends entered the building in a straight line, one guy holding a flashlight in front and one in back.
I was much more scared when we got inside. While I didn't necessarily believe that we were going to see ghosts, the broken glass and clothing scattered on the floor had me thinking that there was someone living in the hospital. If so, I did not want to be the one to disturb him or her.
After a couple of minutes in the really creepy hallways, me and a friend decided that we needed to get out. The aura of that place was just too dark. We couldn't convince our other friends to leave, and they decided to go upstairs to explore further.
My friend and I spent the next 15-20 minutes walking completely around the building. Some of our fear had dissipated until we heard our friends scream. We hurried back to the doors we'd entered through just as they were coming out. When we asked them about their screams, they looked confused and said they hadn't made any noise. They were surprised that we had been on the other side of the building, they said, because they thought they had heard us whispering just outside the window about the same time we thought we heard them yell.
Though we were all thoroughly creeped out at this point, we went inside one more time. My hippie friend warned us not to go into rooms if the doors were closed, saying she was afraid we'd disturb a spirit, but of course the guys were were with did not listen to her. I will never forget the moment that our friend opened the door of what appeared to be a recovery room, shined his flashlight around, and immediately shouted and ran like hell towards the front doors, the rest of us close on his heels.
We left as fast as we could, and when we were in the car and on our way back to Boone, the friend who had initially freaked out told us that he had seen a little girl's reflection in a pane of glass.
We found out later from his roommate that he spent the rest of the night crying.
Needless to say, I certainly think there is some sort of dark presence in that hospital.
Paige, that sounds like a wild night alright. We only had two experiences at the Charles A. Cannon Memorial hospital that we couldn't explain. This is outside of the EVPs we captured. The second time I visited the hospital I was with my brother. The two of us were on the second floor overlooking the main drive to the entrance. While we were investigating near the door leading to the staircase we heard a door slam shut directly below us. We stood there in silence. To be honest we were terrified. I wasn't so much afraid of a spirit or anything like that but of the possibility of another person inside the building. We stood still for what seemed to be an hour. We listened to the door open/close over and over. You can imagine our feelings during this. We didn't enjoy that very much. After a good while we made our way through the upstairs and made for an exit on the other side of the complex. I have no idea if it was a person of what. It was a clear night so one would think that we would have seen someone walk up to the doors. Although, whatever it was making the doors open could have been there when we arrived. Pretty wild. Since then we decided in "the power in numbers" theory. You just never know who you might encounter there. Thieves and whatnot.
During our fourth visit a large group of us Ghost Hunters were on the first floor. Down from the main entrance. Located in the long hallway. Anyways we heard the tile above us on the second floor start breaking. Something or someone was moving above us. We listened for about 15 minutes as something paced back and forth and then we started our investigation. We called out over and over and nothing replied. We started to move towards the stairs when we heard the door on the second floor open and then close. We listened to footsteps and saw absolutely nothing. We thought someone was coming downstairs and if that was the case they would have been directly in our sights. We never did see anyone. We never heard another sound. We investigated the entire building.
We would love to hear your stories. Please post them!
I really want to visit this hospital, if you can give me any tips on how to get in or where to park... i also heard that cops have a certain spot that they sometimes wait for people to come around to. If you have any helpful advice please let me know,
just got back from there 20 minutes ago.... immediate bad feelings of evil.... we walked around one corner and pointed the flashlight down and realized we were standing in a pool of blood.... we bolted... no joke.
A group of 4 friends and myself just came back from the hospital. We approached from the left side (as if you are standing at the road, looking at the hospital), then walked across the front of the hospital and went around from the right side. We were planning on going around the hospital first, to make sure no police were nearby, but as we made it almost exactly to the center of the back of the building, something happened. One of the other guys and myself had flashlights, and we were shining them around constantly. As I shined mine toward the woods behind the hospital, he shined his toward a gap that evidently is at one of the lower levels. He said as he shined his light over this massive hole, he could see across, but his light didn't cover the darkness below. As he did this, all of the sudden we heard a loud, all-encompassing scream. I couldn't tell if it were male or female, but it was high pitched, and reminded me of a scream I heard when a mother found out her son and daughter had died. All 5 of us immediately froze, and I spun to shine my flashlight toward the hospital. Then, roughly 2 seconds later, the exact same scream was heard again. At this point we all bolted, came around the same side of the hospital we had went around, and booked it straight to the road. We continued running on the road toward Lees-McRae campus, and as we reached Hickory Nut Gap road, we slowed for a second. I turned around, and a bright, LED flashlight was bouncing down the lawn in front of the hospital. We again bolted, and took the small trail to the left of the road. Again, we stopped, and the guy in the back of the group claimed to see a lady (3 of the guys swear it was a woman screaming) with a bandana or something on her head carrying a flashlight running down the road. We continued running all the way to campus, and I drove by roughly 10 minutes later, and again 30 minutes later, and saw nothing.
Now, for some theories. I -seriously- doubt it was someone from school sent to prank us. We decided spur of the moment, and saw no one go past us to get there, nor go past us on the way back. Also, we are all in extremely good shape, and sprinted most of the way, so no one could have beat us back on foot. Second theory is from one of the other guys. He (along with 2 others) claim to have heard a second scream at the same time as the 2 scream happened that I heard, but from the woods behind the hospital. I didn't hear it, and neither did one of the others (I haven't asked the final guy), but they think there were people posted, and the screams were communication. They also claim that 2 people chased us initially, and only 1 continued chasing us further. Another theory we have is that it was a homeless person in the dark area that the light wouldn't shine through, and they cut through a pathway (there were several) to chase us after they started screaming, and continued chasing us further. However, I don't know how a homeless person could afford the type of LED light that was chasing us, and why they would chase us past the bounds of the hospital area. Also, as I said before, we are all extremely fit, and also running on adrenaline, and the pace the flashlight kept (though they didn't catch us) was still impressive, and I can't see an unconditioned hobo being able to keep the same pace as us. The final theory is that there was a cop posted back somewhere we couldn't see (and they are rumored to have someone patrolling every night), and they activated the screaming (because to me, the screams sounded exactly the same, and with the same space between the screams). That would also explain the decent fitness of whoever chased us, and the LED flashlight. Also, a friend who had been before said they had been chased, by the same type of flashlight.
Another note, another group of people went as soon as we got back, and they walked completely around the hospital (from left side to right side, with respect from the road) and entered on the right side. They heard no screams, saw no flashlight, and saw nothing out of the ordinary, but left pretty soon after entering due to a girl being terrified. This makes me think my cop theory is true, as they would have thought "there the group for the night" and went to patrol elsewhere.
Let me know what you think! I'll be doing some research of my own, and I'll post again if I hear anything.
Hey guys, my friend and I just explored this site. I didn't know it was haunted till yesterday but got some weird vibes when scouting it the day before the explore. We didn't encounter anything too weird besides that though. Any information on the site and comments would be appreciated, here is the link:

Has anyone visited the 4th floor? Do you have pictures of this floor. Please advise and post. Thank you kindly~
My friends and I were fascinated by the hauted aura of the place as we drove by. Knowing some of the history, we felt compelled to explore. We went to the local convenience store and bought some cheap flashlights. After midnight, when the traffic died down and the night was still, we made our move. At the back of the hospital, we stopped to listen. Dead silence. We chose to enter at the old emergency entrance for some reason. That is when we heard the scream. Two of our group were gone in a heartbeat and headed for the car. I must admit that the other three of us found ourselves headed for safety but my craziest friend grabbed us and settled us down a bit. After all, this was why we were here. After gathering our wits, the three of us turned off our lights so that we would not give away our postions. The moonlight was fairly bright. The ER door was partly open. What a horrible screeching sound it made as we pushed it open just enough to enter. The silence inside was creepy. When we started to walk around every loose tile would creak and echo. When we stopped to gather ourselves we heard the first noise inside. My friend said it was an overhead page for a doctor. Later we wondered if it was an owl, roosting somewhere in one of the upper floors. It took awhile before we pushed on inside. We didn't get far. There were the operating room doors in front of us beaconing us like sirens. Our flashlights were reflecting all over the wall as we peeked inside. I'm really not sure what happened next. I remember seeing what might have been a stretcher with white sheets being pushed by up ahead. It was dimmly lit. Later each of us would have a different idea about what it was. One friend said it was a nurse with a crash cart, rushing to an emergency. Another thought it was a patient running away. We all agreed there was that scream again. I don't remember anything else except trying to go out of there as fast as I could. We all independently wound up back at the car in a few minutes. I still don't know how I cut my hand. We almost freaked until the last guy found his way back out of the woods. I'm glad we waited for him. One thing I can tell you, I'm never going back to that place------NOT EVEN IN THE DAYTIME.
@IraBot
How can me and some of my friends at APPstate get permission to go in and look at this place. Any help would be great cause we are really interested in the paranormal!!
Email me at btyler23@yahoo.com about any info on getting in.
Did you get permission to investigate here? Number one rule for any paranormal investigator is to NEVER investigate a location without permission. If you did kudos's to you for accomplishing the the red tape barrier. Intriguing place!
