Ghost Hunters of Boone, NC Haunted location: Banner Elk abandoned Hospital

I am referring to the Cannon Memorial Hospital. Located about 30 minutes outside of Boone, NC. People claim to have seen ghosts and other paranormal oddities. Our Ghost Hunting group have been several times to this location and we would like for you post here your experiences. We would like to see if your experiences align with ours.

I personally have investigated this location with my team many times. Is it haunted? Well, since I haven't seen a 'ghost' with my own eyes here, I will have to say it is possible. My team and I did in fact have MANY very interesting experiences and captured some pretty scary evps. Occasionally while having experiences we would capture photos that were incredibly bizarre. Not orbs but very strange bodies of light. The location is massive to say the least. It is not recommended that you visit this hospital without proper permission. The building is in terrible shape and it dangerous to walk around in. Over the years the place has fallen to the wills of nature as many of the windows and doors are missing. The tiles on the floor have come unglued and crack with each movement. The wallpaper in each room is pealing off....if the wall is still intact that is. Our investigations turned over some very interesting results and experiences. At one time we were in the 1st floor with a strange ticking sound. As we would investigate it would stop. We would walk off and it would start again. This was followed by one of the loud 'THUMPS' we have ever heard. It was so loud and powerful....we have no idea what it could have been. It happened multiple times without clear direction from where it came from. Another investigation involved opening and closing doors, movement without the floor tiles cracking....which is impossible since all the tiles in the whole hospital have come unglued. The evps were certainly the most powerful evidence we captured. Voices and very nonhuman laughter. It certainly gave us all chills every time we listen. At one point, a female voice (we had no female members at the time) says, "I hate this place!" Other evps would say, "Down below" when we were asking questions about the building. During our 1st investigation, a evp that was captured state, "I didn't do a damn thing" in reference to some questioning that we were involved in. I would love to go back to this location and investigate further and look forward to more investigations. I will check by here ever so often if anyone has any questions or adds to this.

I am from Banner Elk and have been in the hospital many times when it was open, there are voices, ghost and evil in that place. I would love to see any pics you might have.

I was here last week and this place is NOT Haunted! It is a place locals tell 'BS' stories about....It is rundown & has been vandalized very bad. It can be dangerous as there is debris everywhere! Also the Cops have a hidden spot they hang and wait for people to come out of the hospital & they will ticket you! I got caught, but after some conversation, they let us go...But that is because we knew a few of the same Peeps! I would advise staying out of here as it has a ton of asbestos too!

Comment 1- This pretty much goes hand in hand with our experiences. We took hundreds of photos of the abandoned Connon Memorial Hospital. It is so incredibly dusty that every image looks to have capture hundreds of orbs. So, we do not pay any attention to so called orbs.

The atmospher is very wild. Like you said the tiles are bubbling up from the floors, wires and cables are hanging, and there is broken glass and damage everywhere.

I found the fact that when they relocated to the new hospital they didn't take all the files with them. You can actually review charts and diagnoses of patients. It is really amazing.

We did hear doors slamming during our first visit and our last. The first time the door slamming came from the entrace while we were on the second floor. The last visit we were on the main floor when we heard footsteps and doors slamming above us. I would call this paranormal activity. There could have been someone up there. It was just odd. When we raced to see what was making the noises it was too late. We didn't find anything.

I have posted audio on the main page of our investigation of the Cannon Memorial Hospital located in Banner Elk. Please feel free to download it and review it. Please let us know if you find anything.

Comment 2 - Please let us know why you believe the location to house "evil." I am very curious to hear back from you.

Comment 3- You are right about one thing, you have to be extremely careful if you choose to investigate this location. Please feel free to contact us if you need tips on how to gain access to this location.

I visited this hopsital during my freshman year at App. We actually snuck in around 1 a.m. on October 31. It ended up being one of the scariest nights of my life.
As I was driving on Highway 194 on my way to the hospital, my car completely died just after midnight. I found out later that my timing belt had broken. After being towed to a gas station in Banner Elk, I was already so creeped out that I wanted to go back into Boone, but the 6 or 7 people I was with decided we could all pile into the other car we'd taken and continue on to the hospital.

When we got there, we found that the automatic sliding doors on the right side of the hospital were open. The whole atmosphere of the place was really heavy, but I ignored my instincts, and me and my friends entered the building in a straight line, one guy holding a flashlight in front and one in back.
I was much more scared when we got inside. While I didn't necessarily believe that we were going to see ghosts, the broken glass and clothing scattered on the floor had me thinking that there was someone living in the hospital. If so, I did not want to be the one to disturb him or her.
After a couple of minutes in the really creepy hallways, me and a friend decided that we needed to get out. The aura of that place was just too dark. We couldn't convince our other friends to leave, and they decided to go upstairs to explore further.

My friend and I spent the next 15-20 minutes walking completely around the building. Some of our fear had dissipated until we heard our friends scream. We hurried back to the doors we'd entered through just as they were coming out. When we asked them about their screams, they looked confused and said they hadn't made any noise. They were surprised that we had been on the other side of the building, they said, because they thought they had heard us whispering just outside the window about the same time we thought we heard them yell.
Though we were all thoroughly creeped out at this point, we went inside one more time. My hippie friend warned us not to go into rooms if the doors were closed, saying she was afraid we'd disturb a spirit, but of course the guys were were with did not listen to her. I will never forget the moment that our friend opened the door of what appeared to be a recovery room, shined his flashlight around, and immediately shouted and ran like hell towards the front doors, the rest of us close on his heels.

We left as fast as we could, and when we were in the car and on our way back to Boone, the friend who had initially freaked out told us that he had seen a little girl's reflection in a pane of glass.
We found out later from his roommate that he spent the rest of the night crying.

Needless to say, I certainly think there is some sort of dark presence in that hospital.

Paige, that sounds like a wild night alright. We only had two experiences at the Charles A. Cannon Memorial hospital that we couldn't explain. This is outside of the EVPs we captured. The second time I visited the hospital I was with my brother. The two of us were on the second floor overlooking the main drive to the entrance. While we were investigating near the door leading to the staircase we heard a door slam shut directly below us. We stood there in silence. To be honest we were terrified. I wasn't so much afraid of a spirit or anything like that but of the possibility of another person inside the building. We stood still for what seemed to be an hour. We listened to the door open/close over and over. You can imagine our feelings during this. We didn't enjoy that very much. After a good while we made our way through the upstairs and made for an exit on the other side of the complex. I have no idea if it was a person of what. It was a clear night so one would think that we would have seen someone walk up to the doors. Although, whatever it was making the doors open could have been there when we arrived. Pretty wild. Since then we decided in "the power in numbers" theory. You just never know who you might encounter there. Thieves and whatnot.

During our fourth visit a large group of us Ghost Hunters were on the first floor. Down from the main entrance. Located in the long hallway. Anyways we heard the tile above us on the second floor start breaking. Something or someone was moving above us. We listened for about 15 minutes as something paced back and forth and then we started our investigation. We called out over and over and nothing replied. We started to move towards the stairs when we heard the door on the second floor open and then close. We listened to footsteps and saw absolutely nothing. We thought someone was coming downstairs and if that was the case they would have been directly in our sights. We never did see anyone. We never heard another sound. We investigated the entire building.
We would love to hear your stories. Please post them!

I really want to visit this hospital, if you can give me any tips on how to get in or where to park... i also heard that cops have a certain spot that they sometimes wait for people to come around to. If you have any helpful advice please let me know,

Anonymous March 14, 2010 at 9:22 PM

just got back from there 20 minutes ago.... immediate bad feelings of evil.... we walked around one corner and pointed the flashlight down and realized we were standing in a pool of blood.... we bolted... no joke.

Zig May 3, 2010 at 10:46 PM

A group of 4 friends and myself just came back from the hospital. We approached from the left side (as if you are standing at the road, looking at the hospital), then walked across the front of the hospital and went around from the right side. We were planning on going around the hospital first, to make sure no police were nearby, but as we made it almost exactly to the center of the back of the building, something happened. One of the other guys and myself had flashlights, and we were shining them around constantly. As I shined mine toward the woods behind the hospital, he shined his toward a gap that evidently is at one of the lower levels. He said as he shined his light over this massive hole, he could see across, but his light didn't cover the darkness below. As he did this, all of the sudden we heard a loud, all-encompassing scream. I couldn't tell if it were male or female, but it was high pitched, and reminded me of a scream I heard when a mother found out her son and daughter had died. All 5 of us immediately froze, and I spun to shine my flashlight toward the hospital. Then, roughly 2 seconds later, the exact same scream was heard again. At this point we all bolted, came around the same side of the hospital we had went around, and booked it straight to the road. We continued running on the road toward Lees-McRae campus, and as we reached Hickory Nut Gap road, we slowed for a second. I turned around, and a bright, LED flashlight was bouncing down the lawn in front of the hospital. We again bolted, and took the small trail to the left of the road. Again, we stopped, and the guy in the back of the group claimed to see a lady (3 of the guys swear it was a woman screaming) with a bandana or something on her head carrying a flashlight running down the road. We continued running all the way to campus, and I drove by roughly 10 minutes later, and again 30 minutes later, and saw nothing.

Now, for some theories. I -seriously- doubt it was someone from school sent to prank us. We decided spur of the moment, and saw no one go past us to get there, nor go past us on the way back. Also, we are all in extremely good shape, and sprinted most of the way, so no one could have beat us back on foot. Second theory is from one of the other guys. He (along with 2 others) claim to have heard a second scream at the same time as the 2 scream happened that I heard, but from the woods behind the hospital. I didn't hear it, and neither did one of the others (I haven't asked the final guy), but they think there were people posted, and the screams were communication. They also claim that 2 people chased us initially, and only 1 continued chasing us further. Another theory we have is that it was a homeless person in the dark area that the light wouldn't shine through, and they cut through a pathway (there were several) to chase us after they started screaming, and continued chasing us further. However, I don't know how a homeless person could afford the type of LED light that was chasing us, and why they would chase us past the bounds of the hospital area. Also, as I said before, we are all extremely fit, and also running on adrenaline, and the pace the flashlight kept (though they didn't catch us) was still impressive, and I can't see an unconditioned hobo being able to keep the same pace as us. The final theory is that there was a cop posted back somewhere we couldn't see (and they are rumored to have someone patrolling every night), and they activated the screaming (because to me, the screams sounded exactly the same, and with the same space between the screams). That would also explain the decent fitness of whoever chased us, and the LED flashlight. Also, a friend who had been before said they had been chased, by the same type of flashlight.

Zig May 3, 2010 at 10:46 PM

Another note, another group of people went as soon as we got back, and they walked completely around the hospital (from left side to right side, with respect from the road) and entered on the right side. They heard no screams, saw no flashlight, and saw nothing out of the ordinary, but left pretty soon after entering due to a girl being terrified. This makes me think my cop theory is true, as they would have thought "there the group for the night" and went to patrol elsewhere.

Let me know what you think! I'll be doing some research of my own, and I'll post again if I hear anything.

Hey guys, my friend and I just explored this site. I didn't know it was haunted till yesterday but got some weird vibes when scouting it the day before the explore. We didn't encounter anything too weird besides that though. Any information on the site and comments would be appreciated, here is the link:

Has anyone visited the 4th floor? Do you have pictures of this floor. Please advise and post. Thank you kindly~

My friends and I were fascinated by the hauted aura of the place as we drove by. Knowing some of the history, we felt compelled to explore. We went to the local convenience store and bought some cheap flashlights. After midnight, when the traffic died down and the night was still, we made our move. At the back of the hospital, we stopped to listen. Dead silence. We chose to enter at the old emergency entrance for some reason. That is when we heard the scream. Two of our group were gone in a heartbeat and headed for the car. I must admit that the other three of us found ourselves headed for safety but my craziest friend grabbed us and settled us down a bit. After all, this was why we were here. After gathering our wits, the three of us turned off our lights so that we would not give away our postions. The moonlight was fairly bright. The ER door was partly open. What a horrible screeching sound it made as we pushed it open just enough to enter. The silence inside was creepy. When we started to walk around every loose tile would creak and echo. When we stopped to gather ourselves we heard the first noise inside. My friend said it was an overhead page for a doctor. Later we wondered if it was an owl, roosting somewhere in one of the upper floors. It took awhile before we pushed on inside. We didn't get far. There were the operating room doors in front of us beaconing us like sirens. Our flashlights were reflecting all over the wall as we peeked inside. I'm really not sure what happened next. I remember seeing what might have been a stretcher with white sheets being pushed by up ahead. It was dimmly lit. Later each of us would have a different idea about what it was. One friend said it was a nurse with a crash cart, rushing to an emergency. Another thought it was a patient running away. We all agreed there was that scream again. I don't remember anything else except trying to go out of there as fast as I could. We all independently wound up back at the car in a few minutes. I still don't know how I cut my hand. We almost freaked until the last guy found his way back out of the woods. I'm glad we waited for him. One thing I can tell you, I'm never going back to that place------NOT EVEN IN THE DAYTIME.

@IraBot

How can me and some of my friends at APPstate get permission to go in and look at this place. Any help would be great cause we are really interested in the paranormal!!

Email me at btyler23@yahoo.com about any info on getting in.

Jenny February 6, 2012 at 11:35 AM

Did you get permission to investigate here? Number one rule for any paranormal investigator is to NEVER investigate a location without permission. If you did kudos's to you for accomplishing the the red tape barrier. Intriguing place!

I am a local of Banner Elk every since I was born. My friends and I this last Saturday after volleyball practice wanted to do something fun so we wanted to go to the hospital. It was about 3 in the afternoon. We parked at the mill pond and went through the woods and ended up on the left side of the hospital. (As is you were looking from the road.) We went in the door on the first floor, it was all trashed from people who had broken in. It was very cool once we stepped in the room. We could not see anything it was pitch black, even in the day time. We went around to the wheel chair ramp that was the second floor where the cyst -something I don't remember what it was called. There were children paints and puzzle pieces all over the floor. We went around through like a waiting type room that had a baby carriage, crib, and toys. We went through the hallway and up the stairwell. We went in each floor level hallway. Nothing seemed to be haunted as everyone says, but I was still pretty scared. It's a fun time to go. But the one thing that made me creeped out was, once we got back to out car, I found glass in my upper leg and my forearm. I never touched anything in there. I don't believe in ghost but I still can't explain the glass.

I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN AVERY AND WORKED AT CHARLES A CANNON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. I HAD A FEW EXPERIENCES IN THE BASEMENT, THE LUNCH ROOM AND THE MORGUE WAS ON THE SAME FLOOR, SO SOMETIMES I WOULD HAVE TO GO TO THAT AREA TO CHANGE AIR TANKS, AND ALWAYS HEARD THINGS OF THE NIGHT THAT I COULDN'T UNDERSTAND. THE MAIN FLOOR WAS THE DOCTORS OFFICES, ETC, THE SECOND FLOOR WAS OR AND THE NURSERY, AND THE SCY WARD WAS NOT ADDED ON TIL LATER YEARS AND IT WAS ON THE FOURTH FLOOR.

Can you send info on how to get permission. And would another team want to investigate together? We have about 10 who are routinely available.

I worked at the Banner Elk Cafe for a couple years, and I lived in Boone. The drive home every night had me pass the hospital. I had come to believe that all the stories were fake, as I drove past it evey day and never once saw anything out of the ordinary. Then one night on my drive home, as I was passing the hospital, a woman came running out of the swamp on the other side of the road. She was dressed all in white. She jumped in front of my car, and flagged me down. I stopped, rolled down the window and asked if she was okay, if she needed a ride. She got in the car, and started talking about how she had to get away, that those guys were evil and she couldn't be a part of it. I told her to calm down, that I wouldn't let them hurt her, and asked where she wanted to go. She told me the Best Western up the street. This whole experience up to that point had been slightly euphoric, like a fog had been pulled over my eyes. I drove her to the hotel, and when she got out, I noticed the oddest thing. I saw this woman run out of a swamp on a rainy night, dressed all in white, and there wasn't a trace of mud or dirt on her. I left, thanking God that I didn't get on the bad side of the Lady in White. Be wary.

I was there today, we took some pics and it was super sketchy... avoided the cops luckily. Idk if its haunted but the asbestos problem is definitely legitimate. Still I totally recommend going sometime, it's sick.

I am so excited you got in. Next time my sister and I come that way we will do like everyone else...just do it.
We asked permission from the owner. He told us to draw up an agreement in his favor and email it to him. I drew one up saying we would not hold him accountable for anything injuries we may get while on his property and that we would share our findings with him. He said he meant how much money we would pay him to let us come on his property. I told him we didn't charge for our services and would not pay him to walk through his property. He said the TV people paid for the TWC ghost hunters to film an episode there. We told him money can corrupt the findings. If he was paid, we might be intimidated into telling him we found something when we didn't. Plus, we were no where in the same league as that group. He said he was sorry and if we went without permission we would be arrested. I would rather pay the fine for trespassing than pay him anything. He said if he allowed us to walk through free then he would have to let other groups. We thanked him! So just don't ask. The town only has a couple of police cars and can't patrol that place very often. The owner lives in Georgia and has given the TWC (I hope I am saying that right) TV crew permission (meaning a sizeable amount of money) to come back in March 2015. If I find out the exact dates or any of you can let us all know, so anyone interested can at least go over to meet this team of ghost hunters! And maybe sit back always and watch the filming done in daylight!

I am part of carolinaspri.net and I am sure our group would be happy to share our stories with other groups.

We also have a Cryptid side on Facebook look for Carolina Cryptid Crew. Check it out. I believe in the paranormal because of my own experiences, but never thought anything like Big Foot existed. I still supported my group and went on investigations as entertainment. Well, let me tell you about that! I know for a fact something exists that is most likely paranormal and have seen things that cannot be explained and BIG footprints right around our camp site. Tree structures no man could make without heavy equipment which cannot possibly be brought Into these dense forest areas. I want to meet the intelligence who can do these things. We have a 27 acre research area dedicated to only our group. Our finding have been forwarded to the Searching for Bigfoot TV series and they are coming to SC to meet with us. Once a year the owners of the property will let us chose a couple of people we know to join us on an overnight expedition. We do not want anything we find to be harmed. We just want to verify something exists. That has occurred for the owners so they are protecting their property and it's heavily posted. Confidentially statements must be signed before any approvals are given.

I enjoy researching and investigating with both groups!
There are more things in this world and lifetime than we can possibly imagine that don't meet societies definition of normal....and that is what people like us look forward to.

Apparently you are not part of a paranormal investigative group or you would not have written such a ridicous post!
And there are no paranormal investigators I know are not "chicken" to confront the paranormal. We do it with care and scientifically before we determine paranormal. Yes, a demon force such as the one at this hospital can hurt or kill when it's antagonized. We make be afraid at that point but still fearless as to what needs to be done.

For the record I have been here multiple times to this location, but I am gonna share the 2 scariest times
1st visit
A group of friends and I went to the hostipal one night. We was in the basement/kitchen . While we was in this location we heard footsteps pacing on the floor above us. We thought it was cops looking for us thought someone might have called them on us. The guys in the group said they would go upstairs and check it out. While they went to the 1st floor my friend and I decided to try to find a way out. When we found a way back out into the hospital we heard voices that sounded like that was naming off medical terms. We thought it was the guys so we walk down the hallways to locate them. We finally met up and they said they hadn't been talking. Also they informed us that they had not found anyone else in the hospital besides us. We looked around a lil bit more and we got the heck outta there. (Also we found wet blood on the 2nd floor and yes it was blood but there was no drag marks or no bloodie prints so how it happened I have no idea. Also if you research trouble children have been found in there dead. They run away from the grandfather mountain children home. There have a few reports of children found dead at this location.)
2nd
Some co workers and myself decided to visit the hostipal once again. We had seen the show on TV about the ghost hunters checking it out. We wanted to see if room 426 was really haunted. We made our way up to the room we took a flashlight and put it in the window like the ghost hunters did. We start asking if anyone is there with us. Keep in mind everyone that was in our group was in the same room. All of a sudden the door that connects the rooms together slams shut. We all sat there for a second an asked a few more questions. we heard some weird noises so we get up an leave on our way to the stairway we see a dark shadow. The dark shadow wasn't very large but all of us could sense that there was something evil around. This was a couple of my experiences have had more but just to much to type feel free ask any questions:)

I'm planning on going Friday with my team and a buddy. Is it true cops hang around it? And also I'll be going during the day. If it's anything like the Old Davis Hospital then we won't need to go during the night. It'll already be dark enough haha

Unknown May 26, 2015 at 9:44 PM

Tristan, keep us posted on what you find

Natalie June 14, 2015 at 6:55 PM

Hi! I have a school project dealing with photography and I really need to contact the property owner to ask permission to enter the hospital, because I have to be able to figure out shots and everything. Does anyone know how I can get in contact with them?

Thank you in advance!

And maybe sit back always and watch the filming done in daylight!"

So no Natalie you might as well not even try....

Natalie June 15, 2015 at 8:58 AM

Hm, I may just go take my chances then.. Or does anyone else know of a building that is haunted that is more accessible? Truthfully, I really want to go here though.

Thank you for bringing that post to my attention, Tristin!!

Tristin June 17, 2015 at 7:59 PM

There is the Old Davis Hospital in Statesville. I've been there 3 times and it's pretty haunted. No cops are ever around there but you have to wear a respirator because of the lead paint and asbestos. And not a problem Natalie!

Can you email me info on who to contact to gain access to this location for a full night? Please and thank you

Omg...chills ran up my spine.. I'd love to go visit this place myself. Do u have any ideas on how to get permission

Unknown October 21, 2015 at 12:56 PM

The Owner of the Old Cannon Hospital is Olin Wooten.
his email address is ow@owacc.com
The most recent paranormal group to get permission
from Mr. Wooten to go onto the property for 24 hours
had to pay $1000.00. They had 10 people who wanted to go
so each paid $100 a piece. It all had to be paid up well before
the date they agreed on. Good lunch working with Mr. Wooten
As he only discusses money and reminds you if you do not have
a signed letter from him giving you permission to be there, you
Will be arrested and fined!

The only reason the cops are there because of the asbestos and the ower. I live 2minutes from there go bye everyday never seen anything outside the place. But it is hunted, u can feel the bad vibes just being around it. The 4th floor is where u need to go u will surely have an experiment. My husband has been there and it's not safe.

I have received permission to visit the hospital from the owner for a fee of course and would love to research it. Can any one send me any info or tell me where I can find the info? I'm thinking about taking a trip to the local library up there but I'm not really close at all and don't want to waste my time and gas if they don't have any info. If you can help email me dmorenick714@ yahoo.com

Seems like it has been a while since anyone has gone into it. Does anyone have any recent experiences they can share? I am a student at App and am wondering if it is worth the drive over. Sounds like a lot of ghost hunters, but how about people just going to explore or take pictures?

kroseb July 12, 2018 at 6:22 AM

I have been in that hospital all my life until it closed. As a child, I was walking the hallways at all hours of the day and night.

I was born there. My daughter was later born there. My grandmother(dad's mom) died on the 3rd floor, unexpectedly. She just went in for minor hemorrhoid surgery and didn't come home. Many members my family died there.

I used to sleep in 2nd floor ICU waiting room. I have been in every inch of that place, except the morgue. I can honestly say, I could walk that place with my eyes closed, if it were still intact and granted, any place that is quiet and deserted is creepy as can be.

I had family members that worked on the 4th floor. Growing up, it was always told to us if we acted up, or said someone was crazy, people would refer to the 4th floor. "IF you don't stop behaving like that, your gonna drive me to the 4th floor." Still older folks use that reference when complaining about something. And if someone tried to commit suicide they were put on the 4th floor for suicide watch.

I mean seriously people. If you like to scare yourselves then you will be scared.

There is one place that always creeped me out, day or night, that was the basement where the stupid cafeteria was located. Even as a kid, the hair would stand up on my arms for absolutely no reason, whether I was with others or just walking the dim hallway back to the elevator by myself.

My grandmother(mom's mom) was in the hospital a lot and since I lived with her, I was always there roaming around. I slept in the chairs, watching tv in the corner, at the entrance in front. Where X Ray and the lab was, towards the back just on the opposite wall of the emergency room, was actually kind of quaint and comfy. It was dark, old, and familiar. I can remember sitting in the chair in the narrow hall while listening to the hum of the equipment.

While you would think a chapel would offer some modicum of solace...It didn't that was the second creepiest place in that hospital beside the basement. I had been to the chapel a few times when I was 11 or 12 and even if someone was in there with me, they were never there for more than a few minutes and I always had a ball in the pit of my stomach and felt a little nauseous. I didn't feel scared but, I could never shake the feeling until I left the chapel or the basement. The rest of the hospital never bothered me. Also, I never could understand why they would put a freaking cafeteria next to the morgue in a basement.

I have always been really sensitive to the mood in a building or room. I have felt different things in different places in my life. I've been in a building that didn't feel like it was alive at all. It was just a building. I've been in buildings and houses that felt like family. Familiar. I've been in creepy places that gave me a sense of being watched. I'm sure many of you can relate to what I'm saying.
I have many good memories in that hospital. I'm sure some folks have bad ones. That is what I feel like lingers in a building. People's memories or their bad experiences. Not ghosts.

In a summary of how the Hospital feels to me, even to this day, is like family. Like a person whom I'm close to but, also like a person who has secrets and doesn't talk about everything they have seen and done. If you have ever been close to a veteran who has seen war up close and lived to tell about it, that's how I would describe that building. The dark feeling is the fear and pain it has felt and seen in it's life.

I am from Florida and have came up to Banner Elk every year with my family. This year, I was given more freedom to roam around and check places out. I met up with a local and we went into the hospital around sundown. I was always in awe of the history of the building and always drove by it, always very curious of what roamed inside. When I entered the building I knew nothing about the stories or anything. This is a good thing or else I probably would not of went lol. Anyways, if you do plan on going I recommend you park across the street where there is a lake. Then once you cross the street by foot, hug the left side of the gate where all the trees and underbrush are. Then enter once you can't be seen from the main road ensuring you aren't caught by ongoing traffic. REPEAT DO NOT JUMP THE GATE IN THE FRONT! In addition, wear shoes you don't care about because there is mold, broken glass, and etc. on the ground. Once we walked through the trees and underbrush towards the left side of the property, we ventured to the 1st floor from the left side of the building. This entrance appears to be the main non-emergency lobby because there was still a pay station with "we accept VISA" and it seems harder to park an ambulance over there. We ventured back and forth through the first floor, coming across lots of cool looking old files cabinets and chairs. I am surprised they have so many patient files left behind because some of it is sensitive information. As we continued walking on the first floor we came across the cafeteria which is located on the right side of the building. You can access it on either side so no worries about only having one exit, there are TWO exits. But we walked from the left side to the right straight through the hallways, not all the way around the building. The cafeteria is pretty cool, you can walk into all the old coolers where the food was stored. Even some of them are labeled still! There is a lot of hanging wires everywhere so be cautious not to get your eyes stab or something. So proceed with caution.

At this point in the ILLEGAL journey we decided to go into the basement where the morgue is located and the control panels and other areas are. I do not really believe in ghost or any paranormal activity, but I kept thinking a bug was hovering over my right leg the entire time in the basement. But everytime I would look down nothing was there. The first few times I did not really think about it. But after 5-6 times of the same thing I started thinking maybe there was something else than a bug rubbing over my leg. It reminded me of when my brother was little he would wrap his body around my leg and it kind of felt like that once I realized it kept happening over and over again. I was never frightened because I told myself maybe a boy/girl once died in here and he/she just wanted attention. So when I kept feeling the sensation I did not even bother looking down anymore and just let it happened. I had made a friend in the abandoned hospital I told myself. I did not even tell the local about this experience at first because I wanted to keep venturing deeper into the basement and did want to frightened or spook the person I was with. We eventually reached what I believe was the morgue. Now the morgue is a pretty weird location. I definitely felt different in that room. I also noticed the little boy/girl had stopped bothering me in that room. My theory was he/she did not want to be reminded of that room which was filled with death and grief for so many years. After we left that room, we both agreed that we should get going just because it was getting dark and we did not want to get in trouble. Leaving the hospital, I really looked at all the vandalism that had been done. I did not mind the cool looking mushrooms or aliens and thought that was pretty cool. But seeing vulgar terms in there made me upset because if anything you should respect a piece of history in a good way not a bad way. Especially if you believe spirits still lurk behind; you should respect them. I condemn any actions of vandalism to a property. Some of it may appear cool, but it is never right to further destroy a property or paint over it without approval. So be respectful when you go, so others down the road can experience what you got to experience. As we were leaving we decided to walk around the back of building from right to left. We found a staircase that led into the basement into a really dark spot, me being curious we went down there to check it out. It was super creepy, there was a lot of books along the ground that seemed to have been tampered with recently because it had rained early that day and there was some fresh mud prints along the paper on the ground and the muddy ground. This was when we decided to leave haha not knowing if someone else was there or whatever. The other person with me said they heard voices once in awhile thinking it was me, but I really never talked inside so that was very strange as well. Overall it was a cool experience, and I recommend it to anyone who is curious about the past or wants to have a some type of experience even if you don't believe in anything I said or what previous people have written about. I hope this helps! And thank you for all the previous writings! Very cool stories :)

The biggest reason they don't want people inside now it that there is asbestos falling out of the ceilings. You are taking great risks with your future health by entering the building without lung protection.
As far as it being haunted. I worked there. You can ask anyone who worked there and about 10 our of 10 will tell you it is. I have seen things heard things during my years there that cannot be explained any other way than it being haunted.

Anonymous August 9, 2022 at 8:43 PM

Ive been three times. Two of the times the same thing happened. Taking the stairs from the top floor down, we heard a loud bang on the top floor. Dont believe in paranormal stuff but it definitely spooked us. I dont recommend going here as theres likely tons of asbestos and mold, especially the bottom floor.

Anonymous August 9, 2022 at 8:57 PM

Go at night and park up the street in the town with other cars. Bring plenty of flashlights and a filtered mask.

I am the lead investigator of Onlyphantoms Paranormal we would very much like to do an investigation. Please contact us at Onlyphantomsshow@gmail.com

Our Purpose...

This group of Ghost Hunters has been created to prove and disprove the paranormal. It is our goal to be the number one source for Paranormal investigations in the western mountains of North Carolina. Our office is located in the Mountains of Boone, NC. Home of APP State University. We travel from one end of the North Carolina to the other in search of the paranormal.
We investigate haunted locations that time has forgotten. Sometimes these locations are not accessable by ordinary means. Sometimes, these areas must be infiltrated.
All evidence will be uploaded here! We encourage fellow Ghost Hunters to review the evidence and post there thoughts and findings.

Currently seeking ghost hunters and suggestions...

Please contact us anytime via email if you have suggestions or if you are interested in joining The Infiltrators. We are always seeking the assistance of fellow Ghost Hunters. In or around Boone NC.
Our email address is: ncinfiltrator@gmail.com.
We are looking for individuals with a passion for ghost hunting around the Western Mountains of North Carolina. Fellow ghost hunters please contact if interested.
If you have a suggestion please include as much information as possible. We are always looking for haunted locations to investigate as well.

Fellow Ghost Hunters

Our ghost hunting equipment...

We receive many questions from fellow Ghost Hunters concerning the technology that we use. Some have asked about EMF meters, IR thermometers and etc. We do not use such devices in our investigations typically. Namely, you cannot use such information as evidence. Theories yes, but not solid evidence. We attempt to prove/disprove the existance of ghosts using die hard proof.

Our main focus is the evidence that can only be collected from sight and sound. Feelings are important but naturally they are too easily influenced by surroundings, atmosphere and the etc, so they do not account for much here.

Digital Cameras (from SLR’s to point and click), Digital Audio Recorders (multiple models), Night Vision Camcorders (HD based systems) DVR, and more. All these tools and more assist us in our investrigations of haunted locations in North Carolina as we search for ghosts, spirits, and other paranormal oddities.
